The journey from harvest to packaging
Today, the production of Spirulina powder takes place largely in huge, open aquaculture facilities in Asia. There, the algae grow in massive basins. However, some algae farms are also located in Europe.
In these open basins, paddle wheels keep the algae constantly moving so that each cell receives uniform sunlight. Once the algae density is high enough, the green water is pumped through fine sieves or spun in large centrifuges to separate the algae from the water. Only after this mechanical filtration and subsequent cleaning washes is the moist raw paste formed.
