Yes, plenty of sunlight is great! How much exactly, however, depends on the current phase of your spirulina:
At the beginning (young culture): If you have just set up the farm and the algae culture is still quite "thin," you should be a little more sparing with very strong sunlight.
Established culture: As soon as you see that your culture has settled in well and has taken on a beautiful, dark green color, the rule is: as much sun as possible! It is best to place the farm in a sunny spot (e.g., on a south-, east-, or west-facing windowsill) and align the solar panel optimally.
In winter or on cloudy days: Don't worry, thanks to the smart lid with an integrated grow light, your culture will always be supplied with the perfect light spectrum. This way, the farm works all year round – even in the darkest winter.
As a rule of thumb, fresh spirulina paste consists of approx. 80-85% water. A serving of 15 grams (approx. 1 tablespoon) of fresh paste therefore corresponds in nutrient content to about 3 grams of dried powder. The decisive difference is not the quantity, but the quality, freshness, and bioavailability of these nutrients.
Technically no: Your MySpirulina Farm is designed as a closed loop system. With each harvest, you simply save about 250-500ml of your grown culture and use it as a starter for the next batch. Fresh water, a new portion of nutrient salt – and you start over. For the best Spirulina quality, however, we recommend a fresh restart every 3 months with a new starter culture. Over time, an algae culture naturally loses vitality – and at the same time, the risk of unwanted contamination increases with each cycle. A fresh, lab-tested starter culture every 3 months brings your farm back to peak performance: vibrantly green, mild in taste, and full of nutrients. The easiest way to do this is with our Care Subscription: nutrient salt and a fresh starter culture every 3 months, delivered automatically and cancellable at any time.
You don't need to worry about a thing! The spirulina culture will naturally enter a saturation phase. This means that after your vacation (with a bit of luck), you can harvest directly again. Please only unplug the farm before your vacation. Only after a long period of up to 3 months will your spirulina slowly start to die off. So you can enjoy your vacation completely relaxed and then get straight back to it with your farm!
The secret lies in our special nutrient salt. It ensures a very high pH value in the water (a strongly alkaline environment). Spirulina loves this extreme environment and thrives in it. However, for almost all other types of algae, germs, and harmful bacteria, this environment is far too hostile – they simply cannot survive in it. This is how the culture naturally protects itself and remains pure. Incidentally, large, commercial spirulina farms also rely on this proven principle! In addition, the MySpirulina Farm is a virtually closed system thanks to our special lid. It reliably prevents coarse particles, dust, or other things that don't belong there from ending up in your culture. To ensure you consistently harvest the best quality, we recommend a fresh portion of nutrient salt with every new batch and a new starter culture every 3 months. Over time, an algae culture naturally loses vitality – and at the same time, with each cycle, the risk of unwanted contamination increases. This way, your spirulina remains consistently vibrant green, mild in taste, and full of nutrients. The easiest way to do this is with our Care Subscription: nutrient salt and a fresh starter culture every 3 months, delivered automatically and cancellable at any time
